It's been an eventful year for the Research Discussion Group (RDG) "Law and Interdisciplinary" which was established on 1 July 2024. The RDG has close to 40 members from Law and other disciplines across the University of Nottingham. Its monthly hybrid meetings are generating stimulating academic discussions on the academic and practical aspects of interdisciplinary legal research.
The RDG launched with an event in September 2024. In addition to a talk by Dr Sofiya Kartalova, founder and convenor, there was a roundtable discussion on the challenges and opportunities of interdisciplinary legal research. This was followed by a presentation from Professor Paul Roberts on the topic of “Interdisciplinarity: Some Fundamental Questions”. A full news report on the launch event is available.
The focus of meetings in October 2024 and March 2025 were interviews with the editors-in-chief and guest speakers from some of the leading peer-reviewed journals in the field of Law and Interdisciplinarity. These were informative and valuable sessions offering advice and practical tips on how to successfully publish articles and special issues with their respective journals. We would like to thank everyone who made these sessions a success and thank the speakers for sharing insights on the present trends and future advancement of research in this field.
- Professor Carl Stychin (Institute of Advanced Legal Studies) from Social & Legal Studies
- Professor Philip Thomas (Cardiff University) from Journal of Law and Society
- Professor Holger Spamann (Harvard Law School) from Journal of Legal Analysis
- Professor Paul James Cardwell (King's College London), editor of JCMS: Journal of Common Market Studies
- Rebecca O'Rourke, Executive Publisher for Cambridge University Press's Law journals.
Other events hosted during the inaugural year included:
"Interdisciplinary Research Methods in EU Law: A Success Story of Publishing an Edited Volume at the Intersection between Law and Interdisciplinarity" with interviews and presentations by Dr Giulia Gentile (University of Essex) and Dr Tobias Nowak (University of Groningen). Dr Scarlett McArdle (University of Nottingham) provided thought-provoking comments as discussant. This session was held on 7 November 2024.
"Tort of Law and Unawareness" by Professor David Kelsey (University of Nottingham Business School) which took place on 10 February 2025.
We would like to express our gratitude for the support and enthusiasm of all those who made these events a success.
The final meeting of the academic year will take place on 1 July from 2pm to 3.30pm in Room B1 Law & Social Sciences Bulding. The two invited speakers (Dr Clara Rigoni and Dr Serena Natile) will be joining remotely. This will be Part 3 of "An Insider's Perspective on Publishing in Law and Interdisciplinarity".
