CRISPI Conference June 2025: The Idea of Freedom and Modern Slavery

The theme of this year's annual conference hosted by the Centre for Research into Ideas and the Study of Political Ideologies is The Idea of Freedom and Modern Slavery. This one-day event brings together Nottingham-based researchers and external speakers working on freedom, domination, self-ownership, consent, coercion, power, exploitation, and global justice to analyse how these concepts can inform our understanding of modern slavery, and how modern slavery can, in turn, shed new light on the meaning and significance of these normative concepts.

Please register your attendance for this conference.

Speakers include:

  • Gulshan Khan, University of Nottingham "Slavery as Control"
  • Eric Schliesser, University of Amsterdam "On the Modern Origins of Modern Slavery"
  • Joshua Preiss, University of North Carolina "Freedom and Slavery in Global Value Chains"
  • Mollie Gerver, King's College London "Why Ranking-Based Theories of Consent Fail"
  • Todd Landman, University of Nottingham "Freedom and Modern Slavery: The Challenges of Concept Formation
  • Juliana Rinaldi-Semione, University of Nottingham, "Bound and Unbound: Unpacking the Concept of Freedom from Modern Slavery"
  • Nici Mulkeen, Newcastle University "From Structure to Accountability: A Graded Responsibility Model for Tackling Modern Slavery"
  • Diana Popescu-Sarry, University of Nottingham "Liberty's Unfulfilled Promise: Survivor Anti-Discrimination
